8 yard large skip illustration

The 8 yard large skip is where you go when the domestic sizes run out of room. It suits bigger renovations, multi-room work, and jobs that produce a lot of bulky material, from timber and packaging to old furniture and fittings. It is a common sight on building sites for exactly that reason.

The one thing to be clear about is weight. An 8 yard skip is built for volume, not for dense waste. Filling it with soil, rubble or concrete will take it well over its weight limit long before it is full, so heavy loads belong in a smaller skip or a grab lorry.

Dimensions and access

Will a 8 yard skip fit?

A 8 yard skip measures roughly 3.66 m long, 1.68 m wide, 1.22 m high.

An 8 yard skip needs more room than the domestic sizes, so it is worth checking driveway space before you book, and it often goes on the road instead. Where a road permit is needed we arrange it and factor the lead time into your delivery date.

Placement and access are confirmed when you book, so there are no surprises on delivery day.

Heavy waste

For bulk, not weight. Mind dense waste.

An 8 yard skip filled with soil, rubble or concrete is far too heavy to lift and collect safely, so it is the wrong tool for a heavy load. Keep the 8 yard for bulky, lighter waste. If your material is dense, a smaller skip is the right call, and for a large volume of heavy waste a grab lorry is usually cheaper.

Choosing a size

Is this the right size, or should you go up or down?

6 yard builders skip

Drop down for general renovation waste, or anything smaller or heavier.

12 yard maxi skip

Go up only for large volumes of genuinely light, bulky waste.

Permits and delivery

Permits, delivery and collection

Needs a road permit if placed on the highway rather than a driveway. We arrange the application on your behalf. The most popular size on UK building sites alongside the 6 yard builders skip. We deliver on the date we agree and collect once you are done.

More on when a permit applies and what it costs is in our skip permit guide.

Common questions

8 yard skip FAQs

What can I put in an 8 yard large skip?

Bulky mixed renovation and clearance waste: timber, packaging, furniture, fittings and general building waste. It is not suited to heavy waste like soil and rubble, which is too dense for a skip this size. See what can go in a skip.

Can I put soil or rubble in an 8 yard skip?

It is not recommended. Heavy waste in an 8 yard skip goes over the weight limit long before the skip is full, so it cannot be collected safely. Use a smaller skip for a heavy load, or a grab lorry for a large volume of it.

Will an 8 yard skip fit on my drive?

Sometimes, but it needs more space than the domestic sizes, so it is worth checking. It often goes on the road instead, in which case we arrange the permit.

How much does an 8 yard skip cost?

It depends on your postcode and the waste type. See prices for your area on our skip prices page, or get a quote and we will confirm the figure before you book.
