Plain English

How a skip permit works

A skip permit is required whenever a skip sits on a public road, pavement, or verge. The permit is issued by the local highway authority, which is the county council in two-tier areas, and the unitary or city council everywhere else.

01

Find your authority

Use the lookup above, or browse the database. The highway authority is not always the same as the borough or district council in two-tier areas.

02

Check the fee and lead time

Most councils publish a flat weekly or monthly fee. Lead times vary from same-day to 10 working days. The notes column flags anything unusual.

03

We apply for you

When you book a skip with Skyward, we handle the permit application as part of the booking. You pay one price, we deal with the council.

Common questions

Skip permit database FAQs

Why does the cost vary so much between councils?

Each highway authority sets its own fee under the Highways Act 1980 (or the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 in Scotland). Permits range from around £20 in some northern councils to £250 in parts of London and the South East. The fee usually covers a fixed period, often 7 or 14 days, with separate charges for extensions.

What if my council is not in the database, or the cost is missing?

A small number of councils do not publish their permit fee online. In those cases the entry shows the application page link only. Call the council directly, or book a skip with us and we will quote the all-in cost upfront.

How often is this data updated?

Council websites are re-checked periodically and each entry shows when it was last verified. Permit fees usually change once a year, typically in April. We aim to refresh the database after the spring fee revisions each year.
