The student-let churn around Portswood and Highfield keeps skips moving across SO14, SO15 and SO17, with 2 to 12 yard sizes and same-day* drops where there is a driveway.

*Same-day delivery is subject to availability.
Most Southampton skip bookings come off the back of three things: student-let clearances around Portswood, Highfield and The Avenue, refurbishments and extensions across Bitterne, Shirley and Woolston, and strip-outs tied to flat conversions and the regeneration around Westquay and Ocean Village. We supply everything from 2 yard mini skips for a single-room clear-out to 12 yard maxis for a full-property job, dropped on a private driveway where there is space or placed on the road with a Southampton City Council permit arranged for you.
The older core tells its own story. Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the Old Town and St Mary’s, on streets like Bugle Street and off St Mary’s Street in Northam, sit tight to the kerb with heavy parking pressure, so a 4 yard or 6 yard skip with a road permit is usually the practical choice. Out in the interwar and post-war suburbs of Shirley Warren, Lordswood and Bitterne Park the plots open up, with driveways that take an 8 yard skip comfortably for a kitchen rip-out or garden clearance. The pedestrianised centre around Bargate and Above Bar Street runs to loading windows only, so timing matters there.
When a skip has to sit on a public road, Southampton City Council issues the licence at £37 per week, and only operators carrying £10 million public liability cover can apply, which we handle. If the only space is a pay-and-display bay, that suspension is arranged separately through the council’s parking team, and we flag it at booking. Every hire is delivered through a licensed waste carrier registered with the Environment Agency, and on a driveway no licence is needed.
Most general waste is fine: rubble, soil, timber, plasterboard, furniture, mattresses, garden waste, scrap metal, and mixed renovation waste. The main banned items are asbestos, tyres, batteries, paint and liquids, gas canisters, fluorescent tubes, and fridges or freezers, all of which need a separate disposal route.
If you are unsure about a specific item, call us before you load it.

What we handle
Southampton City Council charges £37 per week for a skip licence on the public highway, and only registered operators carrying £10 million public liability cover can apply, which we do on your behalf. If the skip needs to go in a pay-and-display bay, the bay suspension is arranged separately through the council’s parking team. On a private driveway no licence is needed.

Common questions
Skip hire in Southampton runs from around £160 for a 2 yard mini and £210 for a 4 yard midi, up to £305 for an 8 yard and about £420 for a 12 yard maxi, with delivery, collection and disposal included. If the skip has to sit on the road rather than a driveway, Southampton City Council adds a £37-per-week licence, which we arrange for you.
A single room or HMO-room turnover usually fits a 4 yard skip, while a full end-of-tenancy clearout across a shared Portswood, Highfield or The Avenue house tends to need a 6 yard for the furniture, mattresses and general waste. For a whole-property strip-out we would put an 8 yard on the driveway where there is space, or a 6 yard with a road permit on the tighter streets.
Yes, though the historic lanes around Bugle Street and Westgate Street in the Old Town are narrow with tight parking, so we use a 4 yard skip with a Southampton City Council road licence and a booked delivery slot rather than a larger skip. The pedestrianised stretch around Bargate and Above Bar Street is loading-window only, so central and commercial jobs there are timed to those windows.
In Southampton the skip licence covers the highway itself, but suspending a pay-and-display or resident parking bay is a separate application handled through the council’s parking team, with its own fee. We flag it at booking and arrange the licence and the bay suspension together, so a lack of driveway space does not hold up the drop or leave you with a parking fine.
We cover SO14 to SO19, from the SO14 city centre and Old Town out through Shirley, Millbrook and Bitterne to Woolston east of the River Itchen. Driveway drops across the semi-detached suburbs are often same-day subject to availability, while road placements in the terraced streets need the Southampton City Council licence in hand first.
